Circle of Friends

"Circle of Friends" supports women and their children transition from Mary's Place, an emergency shelter in downtown Kitchener, back into the Kitchener-Waterloo community. Volunteers are needed in "Circles" to help support women making this transition. "Circles" are small groups of 2-3 female volunteers and 1 woman from Mary's Place. "Circles" help create a network of support for the woman in her life as they meet each week for a couple of hours. Activities are tailored to meet the needs of the individual woman from Mary's Place; one week a Circle may work on a budget, and the next they may go for coffee and visit.

Ways to Support Circle of Friends:

Volunteer
No special experience or background is required to volunteer, but volunteers should be compassionate, patient, and good listeners. To volunteer you must be an adult female (18 years or older) and able to make a one year commitment to volunteering.

Other ways to contribute
Can't make the weekly commitment, but still want to give! Here are some ways:

  • Organise a game or craft for the women of Circle of Friends
  • Organise a committee at your church or school that is devoted to education and action for people affected by poverty and homelessness. Share what you learn with others; change the stereotypes of 'what' homelessness is and 'who' are homeless; or organise a fund-raiser (e.g. coffee house or talent show) for an organisation or agency that is working with the impoverished and homeless in your community.
  • Donate toiletry items to your local homeless shelter.
  • Donate craft supplies, cleaning items (brooms, mops, etc.), or gift certificates (grocery stores, Tim Horton's, etc.) to Circle of Friends.
  • Give financially and pray for those in need in our communities!
